Salamanca, Spain
448th International Cities of Peace
Rotary Clubs: Salamanca and Plaza Mayor
Today, as Salamanca in the Castille y Leon Province of Spain becomes the 448th International City of Peace, the Rotary District 2201 Conference will host Rotary International President-Elect, Cesar Martins Camargo. In addition to President-elect Carmargo will be Mayor Carlos Garcia Carbayo and Ms. Eve Conway, the Rector of the University, as well as Primary ICP Liaison Ms. Pilar Delgado. We use this important event to remember that in 1911, Rotarianism was defined as the “Principles and Practices of Rotarians”. Creating a peaceful community has been core to Rotary for over 100 years. Salamanca is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of a confluence of Renaissance and Humanism importance, and today two Rotary Clubs have established it as an International City of Peace with the following extraordinary objectives:
1. Integrate Peace Education into Academic Curricula
2. Foster Intercultural Dialogue
3. Support Social Inclusion and Equal Opportunities
4. Promote Collaborative Research for Peace
5. Use Art and Culture as Tools for Peace
6. Promote Active Citizenship and Community Participation
7. Strengthen partnerships between the University, Local Government, and Civil Society
8. Promote environmental sustainability as a pillar of peace
9. Develop conflict prevention and mediation strategies
